10 Things I Like About Christmas Eve

I was going to share some photos of us putting up the Christmas tree (Douglas Fir, purchased at Heritage Farms), but, for some mysterious reason, I’m unable to upload photos to my blog right now. So, the alternative is a quick Happy Holidays to you and 10 things I like about Christmas Eve:

10. Not having to work. Bonus!

9. Driving around to look at lights. This tradition comes from when I was a kid and my parents would take us to look at Christmas lights – and sometimes a live manger scene – while Santa visited the house. Dang Santa, he never stopped in when we were at home; seemed like he always waited until we were out in the car. That’s one clever Claus.

8. Wrapping Dave’s gifts while he’s wrapping mine in another room and all the while we’re teasing each other about the big surprises to come. This will mark our 20th Christmas together. And I still remember Dave calling me in secret from his sister’s house the first Christmas when we were sort of beginning to date but we were telling everyone we were “just friends.”

7. Shaking the presents and guessing what’s inside.

6. Pulling the girls’ gifts out of their stockings. The begging is epic around this time. And this year, Alice is getting an extra gift — a raised food dish. Her vittles will be right at mouth-height for more comfortable access now that she’s seven. We’re pretty sure Alice will say “HELLS YEAH” when she gets this gift. As for Macy, she’s getting some extra tennis balls and I’m thinking about taking her back to obedience school. The latter is more a gift for us than for her.

5. Listening to Christmas music all day, all night.

4. Having at least one drink disaster. Usually it’s a glass of wine spilling on the floor. We’ve already had it today. I made smoothies for lunch and the pitcher on the blender came off without its bottom, sending a flood of blueberry banana smoothie all over the countertop and floor. Yum. Note to self: get new blender at post-Christmas sales.

3. Noshing. We don’t make a big dinner. We usually nosh on our favorite finger foods. Thus begins the holiday eating extravaganza.

2. Working on my top 10 book list while Dave does his top 10 music list.

1. Taking many, many minutes to be thankful for family, friends, health, animals, vegetables, you name it – I’m probably thanking you for it today.

Happy Holidays!

Christmas eve has always been a favorite of mine too. Looking at lights, wrapping up the Christmas eve gifts for the kids. (surprise, PJ’s again!) , listening to Christmas music, quiet dinner with the kids, mass, and then waiting for the kids to go to bed until we put out their Christmas (Santa) presents. Christmas eve was the best time when we were growing up. Santa did come one year we have it on one of the old home movies you must have been a baby or maybe it was just before you arrived. Merry Christmas eve to all!
